As reported by CNET, Wednesday (26/10/2011), McCarthy's death was announced viaTwitter by the Faculty of Engineering, Stanford University. McCarthy had joined Stanford in 1962 and 2000.
McCarthy created the Lisp, which is the choice of programming language for artificialintelligent (AI). Lips is one of the oldest high level programming language and is still used today.
Men born in Boston, said that he feels there are aspects of human intelligence could beenough to be described with a machine that simulate it.
"If a machine can do a job, then the automatic calculator can be programmed to simulatethe machine," McCarthy wrote in a research proposal in 1955.
"The speed and capacity of computer memory is not sufficient to simulate the function ofthe human brain. The main obstacle is not lack of capacity of the machine but our inability to write the program," he said in the proposal.
He described AI as "the science and engineering expertise to make smart machines".
McCarthy believes that AI should be interactive and able to react to what is accepted andgiven to him, just like on AI simulator, Eliza or who have recently attended, Siri.
McCarthy has also been awarded the Turing Award from the Association for CoumputingMachinery in 1972 and the National Medal of Science in 1991.
