7,2 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Japan

An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude has struck off the coast of Japan, shaking buildings in the capital, Tokyo, and triggering a small tsunami.

The tremor was centered 168km (104 miles) from the east coast, north-east of Tokyo.

A 60cm (24in) tsunami reached the coastal town of Ofunato, with other towns reporting smaller waves shortly after the quake hit at 1145 (0245 GMT).

There are so far no reports of damage or injuries.

Honhsu Japan’s earthquake today did not create atsunami. Honhsu Japan, and specifically Sendai, Morioka, and Fukushima, were struck by a 7.2 earthquake today. Shaking was felt as far as Tokyo.

In a news statement issued this evening from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, officials indicated “a tsunami is not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. No tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.”

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a news bulletin after the earthquake stating that “based on … data .. a destructive Pacific-wide tsunamis not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.” It also added that the “The Japan …. agency may also issue tsunami message for this event to countries in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea Region.”
