Knowing how to put together a concise and engaging presentation is becoming an essential skill in business and academic situations. Having a smart slideshow does three essential things in these situations: firstly, it allows the presenter to give the audience a range of information that would be tedious to run through verbatim; secondly, it forces the presenter to boil down his or her information to a few well- chosen bullet points; and finally, it provides a large area for the audience to focus on while the presenter shuffles his or her notes. In this chapter you’ll start by creating a short presentation using text, links, and images based on the Impress Blank template. You’ll be introduced to some, but not too many, animations, such as point-by- point builds and slide transitions, and then you’ll add some visual interest by creating a theme to underpin this, and future, presentations. In the final part, you’ll look at the tools Impress offers to assist the presenter in delivering a slideshow or outputting it for later distribution.
Presentations are all about effective communication, and while Impress won’t
make you a great presenter, it can help focus your mind on the message and give your audience
an additional view of your thoughts.
